The Journey

Navigate from Badulla Railway Station (eastern terminus of the Upcountry Line, opened 1894) to Bandarawela Railway Station (originally 1893) across a span of 36km.

Scenery Highlights
  • Nine Arches Bridge (Demodara) — Sri Lanka's most iconic railway landmark (91 m span, 30 m tall, built 1921 of stone and brick without reinforcing steel because World War I had diverted all imported steel)
  • Tea estate panoramas from the highland viaducts — Uva and central Province estates visible from the train
  • Demodara loop and tunnel sequences — the track spirals 270° and tunnels beneath itself to gain elevation
  • Misty highland views above Ella (1,040 m)
  • Lush green hills of the Uva Province — among the highest-quality Ceylon tea-growing districts
  • Haputale-Dambatenne tea estates and Lipton's Seat panorama visible on clear days
  • St Clair and Devon waterfalls cascading into the valley below the track (winter months)

Route Engineering Challenges

  • Narrow gauge branches and tight curves through highland terrain

  • Frequent weather disruptions (landslides) during monsoon season April–September

  • Nine Arches Bridge — 91 m span, 30 m tall, built 1921 entirely of stone and brick (no steel) because World War I had diverted all imported reinforcing steel; still in daily freight-and-passenger use
