The Journey

Navigate from Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi across a span of 15.5km.

Scenery Highlights
  • The signature figure-eight loop at Jatare — the only regular narrow-gauge railway in the Balkans that physically crosses over itself in service
  • Drvengrad (Mećavnik) — Emir Kusturica's wooden ethno-village perched on the ridge 350 m above the line, with its chapel of St. Sava, library and the famous 'Underground' film-set bunker
  • Zlatibor Mountain Range panoramic viewpoints — on clear summer mornings the line commands a 40 km view across the Čajetina plateau
  • The 22 bore tunnels in 15.5 km — among the densest tunnel concentrations on any surviving European narrow-gauge heritage railway
  • Stone-and-steel Viaduct #2 ('Ćira's Bridge') — the iconic poster-view crossing over the Beli Rzav tributary
  • Šargan Vitasi summit station at 877 m — the highest point on the line, with a small museum, gift shop and panoramic terrace
  • Mountain pasture clearings around the summit — frequented by Serbian shepherd communities in summer and one of the best places in the country to see golden autumn colours in October

Engine / Locomotive

Steam: historic narrow-gauge tank locomotives (typically Yugoslav 'Ćira'-class 0-6-0T and Serbian heritage 0-6-0T units) operating on heritage days. Diesel: 'Ćira'-class diesel locomotives and a small Romanian-built Mărița-class diesel railcar provide cover when steam is unavailable. Heritage steam is not guaranteed — diesel operates most shoulder-season days.

Locomotive Weight

Approximately 18–22 tonnes (typical Yugoslav 0-6-0T narrow-gauge steam tank engine)

Track Gauge

760 mm (Bosnian / Austro-Hungarian narrow gauge, also called 'Bosnian gauge')

Braking Technology

Steam locomotive brake plus automatic air brake on carriages; heritage vacuum brake on the older 'Ćira' wooden stock. The steep descent from Šargan Vitasi requires dynamic / counter-pressure braking on the locomotive to manage the 3% downhill grade.

Route Engineering Challenges
  • Figure-eight loop (osmica) at Jatare — the line physically crosses itself on a single-track alignment, requiring a mid-route reversal at the loop intersection and posing a sustained operational risk if a train stalls in the loop

  • 22 bore tunnels in 15.5 km — among the densest tunnel concentrations on any surviving European narrow-gauge heritage railway, requiring constant masonry inspection and clearance work

  • 5 stone-and-steel viaducts over deep Detinja and Beli Rzav river valleys — masonry and steel-truss maintenance is continuous and dependent on volunteer labour

  • Sharp curves and steep gradients throughout (~3% sustained) — restrict rolling stock to narrow-gauge short-wheelbase units and preclude the use of any standard-gauge vehicles

  • Winter snow blockages on the Šargan Pass summit section — the upper 4 km from Jatare to Šargan Vitasi is closed when snow depth exceeds 30 cm, forcing the winter Mokra Gora–Jatare short route

  • Wildfire and forest-fire risk during the dry August–September period — mountain forest fires in 2007 and 2015 came within metres of the line and require ongoing vegetation management

  • Austro-Hungarian narrow-gauge spares scarcity — bearings, axle-boxes and 'Ćira'-class spares are no longer manufactured, requiring custom fabrication by the heritage workshop

  • Single-track operational vulnerability — there is no passing loop between Mokra Gora and Šargan Vitasi, so the entire 15.5 km section is operated as a single block under a token system, limiting frequency to ~2–3 round trips per day

Construction period

1921–1925 (original narrow-gauge line)

Re-opening as heritage railway

2003 (Mokra Gora–Šargan Vitasi section reopened by Nostalgija Šargan)

Original full route (closed 1976)

Užice – Mokra Gora – Šargan Vitasi – Višegrad (~80 km, Yugoslav narrow-gauge Belgrade–Sarajevo mainline)

Operating section length

15.5 km one way / 31 km round trip

Maximum elevation

877 m at Šargan Vitasi summit station

Altitude gain

~565 m (Mokra Gora 312 m → Šargan Vitasi 877 m)

Number of tunnels

22 (densely concentrated in the upper section)

Number of viaducts

5 (stone-and-steel construction, mostly 1920s)

Maximum gradient

~3% (30‰) sustained

Maximum speed

~25 km/h (limited by curves, narrow gauge and short passing infrastructure)

Journey time

~2.5 hours round trip including the photo-stop at the figure-eight loop

Direction options

Mokra Gora → Šargan Vitasi (ascending, signature loop reversal at Jatare); plus winter short Mokra Gora → Jatare → Mokra Gora

Operator

Nostalgija Šargan / Muzejske Železnice Srbije heritage concession, under ŽS Infrastruktura (Serbian Railways Infrastructure)

Rolling stock — carriages

Restored 'Ćira' wooden narrow-gauge stock from the 1920s/1930s, with open balcony platforms between cars

Rolling stock — locomotives

Heritage Yugoslav 0-6-0T steam tank engines (seasonal); 'Ćira'-class diesel locomotives and a Mărița-class diesel railcar (cover)

Heritage significance

Last surviving narrow-gauge mountain railway in Serbia; figure-eight loop is unique among regular narrow-gauge services in the Balkans

Cultural associations

Emir Kusturica's Drvengrad (Mećavnik) ethno-village sits 350 m above Mokra Gora station; 2004 film 'Life Is a Miracle' shot on the line
