The Journey

Navigate from Riyadh North Railway Station to Qurayyat Railway Station across a span of 1200km.

Scenery Highlights
  • First-night Najd sunset as the train climbs gently out of Riyadh
  • Early-morning crossing of the Harrat Khaybar basalt field (the largest lava field in the Arabian Peninsula, last active around 600 AD)
  • Sunrise over the Nafud edge near Haditha — one of the most photographed moments of the journey

Engine / Locomotive

GE Transportation (now Wabtec) AC4400CW diesel-electric locomotives in SAR livery, paired for the 1,200 km corridor; passenger carriages are hauled, locomotive changes at Hail

Locomotive Weight

Approx. 192 t per AC4400CW unit (twin-unit pair ~384 t)

Track Gauge

1,435 mm (standard gauge)

Braking Technology

Air disc brakes with dynamic-blending regenerative on AC4400CW; electronically controlled pneumatic (ECP) backup on the Dream carriages

Route Engineering Challenges
  • Crossing the basalt-floored Harrat Khaybar lava field (largest lava field in the Arabian Peninsula) — the track is laid on engineered embankments to bridge the rough volcanic terrain

  • Sustaining continuous welded rail through the Nafud desert edge where surface sand temperatures exceed 70 °C in July–August, requiring SAR rail-painting and seasonal speed restrictions

  • Operating passenger coaches on a primarily mineral freight corridor — passenger slots are coordinated with SAR's phosphate and bauxite train workings; weekly passenger slots are fixed 8 months in advance

  • Sustaining ballast stability across the northern basalt plains where seasonal wadi flash-floods (November–March) wash out approaches

  • Locomotive change at Hail because SAR's passenger-stock ECP braking is incompatible with the heavy-haul mineral-train braking cycle

  • Watering stops at Haditha and Hail in the dry season — the longest continuous diesel-hauled passenger sector is 580 km between Hail and Qurayyat

  • Heat-speed restrictions north of Hail during July–August when ambient temperatures exceed 48 °C; passenger schedules then slow by 90–150 minutes

  • Maintaining rolling-stock bearings through fine Najd sand — Dream carriages are pressure-sealed and the locomotive intakes are cleaned at the Riyadh depot between rotations

  • Single-track alignment over 96% of the corridor — 9 passing loops including the major Hail yard and Sakaka yard

  • Border-administration stop at Al-Jawf in Saudi territory — Saudi immigration pre-clears international-bound passengers before the final sector to Qurayyat, although the Jordanian frontier is not crossed by rail
