Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) operates a fleet of metre-gauge steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn Baureihe 99.23 (eight currently serviceable in 2026, including 99 7231–99 7247, with several undergoing long-term overhaul at Dampflokwerk Meiningen). Heritage diesel railcars (Kö-type) provide cover when steam locomotives are unavailable. Steam fleet includes: 99 7231, 99 7232, 99 7234, 99 7235, 99 7236, 99 7237, 99 7239, 99 7241, 99 7242, 99 7244, 99 7247. Note 99 6001 'Ballerina' is currently an exhibition piece at Gernrode (not in regular service).
Locomotive Weight
Approximately 56 tonnes (Baureihe 99.23 in working order)
Track Gauge
1,000 mm (metre gauge)
Braking Technology
Steam locomotive brake plus automatic air brake on carriages; heritage vacuum brake on some older rolling stock; air brake on modernised heritage coaches.
Route Engineering Challenges
Steep sustained gradients of up to 4% on the Schierke–Brocken section, requiring all trains to bank up with a second locomotive on heavier services
Extreme weather at the 1,141 m summit — sub-zero winter temperatures, freezing fog and rime ice; snowplough operations frequently required
Wildfire risk during summer droughts — Level IV forest fire warnings have triggered modified timetables (e.g., June 22 to July 1, 2026)
Single-track mountain alignment with limited passing loops between Schierke and Brocken
Long-term decarbonisation plan: HSB has announced strategic intent to phase out coal-fired steam by 2030, with hydrogen or other low-carbon traction under evaluation
Replacement bus service in operation between Ilfeld Neanderklinik and Eisfelder Talmühle (March 2 – August 31, 2026) for Harzquerbahn engineering works, affecting Brocken transfers via Nordhausen
Maximum elevation
1,141 m (Brocken summit station — highest narrow-gauge station in Germany)
