The Journey

Navigate from Cuvu Railway Station (Cuvu Village, Coral Coast) to Frangipani Beach (Vunabua Beach turnaround) across a span of 22km.

Scenery Highlights
  • Five traditional Fijian koro (villages) the line threads: Cuvu, Vusole, Nadave, Lomolomo, and Vunabua — guides narrate kava traditions and chiefly protocols at each
  • Two mangrove causeway crossings over the Sigatoka River tributary — wildlife includes white-faced herons, mangrove monitors, the occasional Pacific black duck
  • Rock-walled cane-rail cutting through the Sigatoka River tributary — the same alignment the FSC diesel locomotives used to haul cane from the 1960s
  • Coastal palm-tunnel section along Frangipani Drive with mature coconut palms forming a 200 m green canopy over the rail head
  • Frangipani Beach (Vunabua) turnaround with swimming, snorkelling, and views of the fringing reef on calm days
  • Lomolomo Village approach with views of the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park ridgeline in the distance to the southwest
  • Dry-season vistas to Beqa Lagoon on the clearest mornings (June–September visibility, 12+ km line-of-sight)

Engine / Locomotive

Electric-assisted 250 W throttle-on-demand hub motor (per rail bike); pedalling optional, auxiliary motor engages automatically on inclines and headwinds. Battery is 36 V 10 Ah lithium-ion, recharged at the Cuvu depot overnight.

Locomotive Weight

85 kg per two-person rail bike (rider + companion capacity 200 kg combined load)

Track Gauge

610 mm (2 ft) narrow gauge — former Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) cane railway, retained original ballast and rail joints with recycled-plastic sleeper inserts on the 2017 re-lay

Braking Technology

Mechanical disc brake on the front wheel of each rail bike, plus regenerative braking from the hub motor (recovers ~10% battery on downhill sections); depot-side ground staff verify braking function before each tour departs

Route Engineering Challenges
  • Routing a passenger service along a dormant cane-rail corridor — track re-lay in 2017 retained original ballast and only replaced damaged sleepers (recycled plastic inserts) to keep costs sustainable for the operator and the FSC estate

  • Managing Sunday respect for Fijian village customs — the line threads five traditional koro (Cuvu, Vusole, Nadave, Lomolomo, Vunabua), so all Sunday departures are cancelled even though the track and weather often permit operation

  • Navigating mangrove causeways during king tides — the two causeway sections over the Sigatoka River tributary are deliberately built just above mean high water, so riders can expect shin-deep brackish splashover on the highest spring tides (typically two windows per lunar month in dry season)

  • Maintaining the rock-walled cane-rail cutting (the 'Sigatoka Cut') through the Sigatoka River tributary — the cutting has been stable since the FSC days, but heavy tropical downpours (December–March wet season) require monthly inspection for loose basalt

  • Sourcing rail-bike rolling stock — the current EcoTrax fleet is sourced from Dutch rail-bike manufacturer 'RailBike' B.V. (the same model used by the Dutch 'Trein van de Maand' heritage operators); spare parts air-freighted from Rotterdam for any failures
