Engine / Locomotive

SCR-operated EP2D or VL11M electric locomotives on the Armenian electrified segment (3 kV DC); diesel backup VL10 or TEM-series on the Georgian segment where electrification is partial. Modern Transmashholding carriages with air-conditioning, vacuum toilet systems, and bi-standard couplings for the cross-border interchange at Ayrum/Sadakhlo.

Locomotive Weight

EP2D electric: 138 t (6-axle, Bo'Bo'Bo'); VL11M: 184 t (6-axle, Bo'Bo'Bo'); VL10 (legacy): 192 t. Georgian segment typically uses M62 (ČKD T679, 120 t, 1,500 hp diesel) or modern TEM18 (Transmashholding, 126 t, 3,000 hp).

Track Gauge

1,520 mm Russian gauge throughout (Armenia and Georgia share gauge) — historically the Transcaucasian Railway alignment.

Braking Technology

Pneumatic air brakes standard on all SCR and Georgian Railway rolling stock. Modern EP2D and Transmashholding carriages use electropneumatic braking with electronic anti-skid control.

Route Engineering Challenges
  • Lori Gorge crossing in northern Armenia — deep Debed River canyon requiring multiple bridges and embankments

  • Caucasus watershed crossing at elevation — Surami Pass (949 m) between Tbilisi and Kutaisi with significant gradient changes

  • Ayrum/Sadakhlo border crossing — technical pause for onboard customs and passport control (30–60 min)

  • Tbilisi junction transit requires routing through the city rail node as an intermediate stop

  • Approach to Batumi along the Kolkheti lowlands — flat but coastal engineering with drainage challenges in the subtropical climate

  • No direct Armenia–Turkey rail link (border closed since 1993); all international traffic routed via Georgia

  • Nagorno-Karabakh corridor (Lachin rail link) closed since 2023 Azerbaijan offensive — formerly provided second Armenian rail exit

  • Single-track alignment on much of the Armenian segment limits capacity to one round-trip per day

Maximum Speed

100 km/h (Armenia) / 120 km/h (Georgia, on dedicated segments) / 80 km/h (Surami Pass)

Gauge
